Delivery idea

Use Rugby World Cup welcoming parties to explore students' life skills and citizenship.

Stage one: look at how Rugby's core values link to the welcoming parties for the Rugby World Cup teams (one lesson).

Stage two: students present ideas for a welcoming party for one of the Rugby World Cup nations (one or two lessons).

Stage three: students plan to host a welcoming party for one of the Rugby World Cup teams. Rugby's core values should be demonstrated as part of their planning and presentation (three lessons).

How to do it

Each group in the class is given a country. (These could link to Rugby World Cup playing bases; for example, select a team playing at Milton Keynes.) The aim is to collect the maximum number of points through the welcoming party plan, presentation and how well they listen to others' presentations. The students collect points based on how well they score against Rugby's core values: three points per value x 5 = 15 (maximum score).

  • Teamwork - how well students work together (rated by teacher).
  • Respect - effectiveness of students' communication during the planning and presentation (rated by teacher).
  • Enjoyment - how much other students enjoyed the presentation (rated by students).
  • Discipline - how well groups stayed on task (rated by teacher).
  • Sportsmanship - how well students share ideas and feed back to each other (rated by teacher and/or students).

Instead of collecting points, students could collect player positions, and students could adopt specific roles linked to player positions, for example fly half/No. 10 is the decision-maker in the team. An accompanying team roles sheet would clarify each player's skills and qualities.

Students need to consider all of the roles required for a welcome party and think about aspects such as culture, food, dance, history, dress and language. Students would be given time to research each aspect and develop their welcome party plan before delivering it to the rest of the class. Students would be marked by the teacher and other students against the core values. The winning team could present their idea in a house or whole school assembly.

When/ where to use it

The project could be delivered as a stand-alone project or as part of an immersive learning day. It could be linked to a significant moment or wider event, such as 100 days to go to the Rugby World Cup, National School Sports Week etc.
