Delivery idea

Use art to raise awareness of Rugby World Cup 2015 and Rugby's core values, and promote cultural events as part of the Tournament.

How to do it

Stage one: students identify potential themes and links to Rugby through mind-mapping art works/ artists from around the world, focusing on countries participating in Rugby World Cup 2015.

Stage two: give students a range of studies showing different approaches and possibilities. Allow them time to develop an approach they feel could work for them. For example:

  • pencils, pens, charcoal, pastels, inks, paints
  • collage, printing, photography, sketching
  • batik, dyeing, embroidery
  • clay, plaster, paper mâché, wire, plastics, wood, mosaics

Develop the students' use of analysis so they can critique their own work. They can do this by making connections between different images, and making connections between their ideas and the work of other artists and designers. Cultural understanding can be demonstrated by students knowing:

  • where this style was produced
  • how it reflects its cultural background
  • its symbolic, historical or spiritual meaning.

The students' aim is to develop their ideas, whilst being research-focused. The end product is an inspiration board consisting of lots of ideas relating to the design brief. Students are challenged to make sure they have:

  • produced practical work from their research
  • included notes or annotations to record their thoughts and ideas
  • made their work personal, not just copied material
  • selected and presented their work carefully.

Stage three: students produce an exhibition of their work. This is displayed around school and is promoted to the public as well as to other students and school staff. Students are encouraged to use electronic media, for example Instagram and Twitter, to promote the exhibition.

When/ where to use it

The exhibition could be held at the same time as any of the signature moments leading to Rugby World Cup 2015, for example during the Twickenham Rugby 7s, National School Sport Week, 100 days to go etc.

Top tips

  • Use social media to promote the exhibition.
  • Art works could also be linked to school sport events, for example School Games Rugby.
